Well written. An engrossing story of not only Gauguin's life, but also of the larger historical context in which he lived. This is no apotheosis of Gauguin's life, but a real psycho-social history of the formation of his character. The reader will also come away with a rich history of the culture of continental Europe with its enthusiasm and optimism that prosperity and happiness would only improve year after year. No one perceived or, perhaps, could have perceived that the ground work for the 1914 European implosion was being laid. This is a story of both the life and times of Paul Gauguin and the twilight zone of modernism. All of which is both an enjoyable and easy read.John F. Gilligan, Ph.D.
