I read this as a student 25 years ago. After two and a half decades as a professional director, it's stil the first book I recommend for understanding the basics of the craft. It covers, with plenty of examples, pretty much everything you can learn without working hands on (the exception, here, is that it doesn't go very deep into other, less traditional approaches to directing such as Grotowski, Meisner, or Viewpoints).
